This just didn't do it for me. Not the shoehorned romance. Not the convoluted plot. Not the female romantic interest who was both smart and capable as well as a ditz who needed constant hand holding. Pick a lane, Petrie!
Worst of all, I don't think there was enough Ash being his awesome self. I was hoping book 2 of the series would be better than book 1, but unfortunately this is the book that has made me choose to not continue the series at all.
