The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by S.A. Chakraborty

5.0

“For when Amina chose to leave her home and return to life at sea, she became more than a pirate. More than a witch. She became a legend.”

A wonderful story following renowned (and retired) pirate captain Amina al-Sirafi as she embarks on one last adventure. As Amina assembles her crew and gets on her way, she discovers that there is a lot more to this job than she initially thought.

Amina is a wonderful main character. It is so refreshing to read from the perspective of a more mature woman (Amina is in her 40s) and how the lens of motherhood and how it affects her decision-making on the adventure was really great to read.

I ADORED the crew and the characters we meet along the way. The dialogue was excellent and ranged from being incredibly insightful and reflective to being genuinely hilarious.

The world is so rich - it was such an immersive reading experience. The stories that were shared, the myths, legends and other historical stories that were shared created such an atmospheric setting.

I also really enjoyed the breaking of the fourth wall when Amina was talking to the scribe who was piecing together her story - it was so fun and I imagine that the audiobook for this is amazing.

“For this scribe has read a great many of these accounts and taken away another lesson: that to be a woman is to have your story misremembered. Discarded. Twisted.”

I can't wait to see where Amina's adventures take her and her crew next
