First of all, I love how simple this cover is. If I saw it in a book shop, I'd definitely pick it up to see what it's about, and the cover really adds to the air of mystery.
I thought this story was really well paced, with just the right amount of background to balance the mystery/thriller element. I loved the dual POV and dual timeline telling with Mary on the 1940s and Luke in the 1960s. I thought the hints in the later timeline as to what may have happened in the past worked really well and had me absolutely hooked.
The writing in this book was absolutely brilliant. The speech felt realistic and natural, and the slightly more sciencey/medical elements were easy to follow.
The plot of this book was really exciting to me, although I was saddened to realise that the medical issues caused by nuclear science work were real. I think I knew somewhere at the back of my mind, but reading a book about it bought it all home. There were a lot of elements to the story, but they worked so well together. The different threads were interwoven to create fully rounded, realistic characters that I really cared about.
I was shocked to realise that this is a debut novel. It was honestly so good. I'll definitely be looking out for more by Kay in the future.
