Though the characters aren’t the focus, it isn’t necessary as you learn about them in the anime. Even so it’s not like you don’t learn about the characters and they do feel like real people. The narrative focus is the plot and that comes to the books strength, with a complicated but interesting take on detective work and a continuation of the Death Note universe. Though this book isn’t without its flaws as you learn very little about L, who is one of the main players in this “detective-battle” and may be hard to pick up for new readers who haven’t already watched the anime. As well as that, a lot of the tropes, murders and aspects of this books may be alien to any demographic that this books isn’t specifically targeting. Those who don’t read manga, aren’t familiar with the series with aspects such as Shinigami’s what a death note is and what anime is. Other then that this is a great read for fans of death note and it’s more detective-side.
