River of Stars by Guy Gavriel Kay
5.0
A major theme of this book is how small events or decisions or encounters can have major impacts on people lives and even on the fate of empires. We are all just being carried along in the streams of time (in rivers under the stars after all) and the smallest eddies in the current can have huge impacts downstream - or potentially no impact. If I'm going to be brutally honest, I would have to say that this point was sometime belaboured. However, this is a beautifully written story, with subtle and often witty dialogue, and a wonderful evocation of a world and its times.
