Letters to Milena
by Franz Kafka
i am kafka but i wish i was milena in their relationship, in the sense of kafka being completely engulfed in her. the longing, the intensity of the emotions, the contradicting thoughts. all were very moving, especially when one can relate to many of the points he is making. it’s such a shame that their relationship couldn’t be sustained with such a deep attachment. it’s upsetting that milena was unable to leave her husband to be with kafka, and the fact that their relationship took place while she was married isn’t right, but i am glad kafka made the call in the end to not continue, because it was so exhausting and unfair to him. although we only see kafka’s perspective, their exchange of thoughts and emotions make me feel as though he was the one who cared more, especially for how long and how often he would write her without receiving a response. i read this at the perfect time, one where i’m able to understand where he comes from, why he thinks the way he does, why he feels the way he does, why he cares for her and loves her so much. 4.5.
