The Hunger
by Alma Katsu
This book suffered the same way most horror stories do: once you have defined the horror, it ceases to serve you. For me, this was true not only for the creatures stalking the Donner party, which were wonderfully creepy right up until you found out what they were (Seriously? That’s what we’re going with?), but also for the backstories of the party members. Sometimes, subtlety and insinuation are the best tools in a writer’s repertoire.
Ultimately I wouldn’t warn against this book, but I much preferred “all the white spaces†by Ally Wilkes if you want a similar horror that felt much more satisfying to me.
