The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson

dark emotional informative reflective slow-paced

4.5

This book has such a massive scale, and the entire time I was reading it I was thinking about how much time and care went into collecting these stories and historical data. I liked her selection of the people we followed, although at times I found it difficult to keep the years straight while reading about their experiences. I was so struck by the way she told Robert's story of driving to California, in particular (and it was satisfying to find out that she had done the work of driving his same path while writing it). I also loved Ida Mae's story and the way that because it started earlier than the others' how expansive and LONG it felt. There were definitely times I struggled to get through because of some repetiveness and some stories that felt extraneous to the main thread, but overall I'm glad I read this.
