The Red Palace by June Hur
4.0

Brilliant as always – June Hur weaves such compelling tales of murder, palace intrigue, and court politics in Joseon Korea, layered richly with commentary on class structures and the patriarchy.

With dynamic characters and a fast-moving plot, you can't help but root for Baek-hyeon as she assists the plucky Inspector Seo in the search for the truth about the murders taking place in the capital. I also loved how the theme of family loyalty was explored through Hyeon's relationship with her parents, in parallel with Physician Khun's relationship with his sister and mother.

I've loved all three of June Hur's historical mystery novels – she just doesn't miss – and you can bet I'll be picking up the next one.
