The Torrent by Dinuka McKenzie

5.0

Hard to believe this is McKenzie's debut novel. This Aussie crime story is great. I listened to the audio book and had trouble pressing pause. The main character, Kate was instantly relatable, the story believeable, and the flawed humanity of the characters spot on. Throw in some slick twists and drama and you have a clever read. The small regional town flowed effortlessly into my mind from McKenzie's sparse and sensitive descriptions and I felt every twinge and ache of Kate's 8 month pregnant body as she continued to do her job effectively, but with more care and compassion than is shown to her.
A great read.
