Now THIS is the ending I would expect from a Robin Hobb book. I'm very glad I read this back to back with Dragon Keeper - I feel like I got closer to the duology experience that Hobb intended. Obligatory 5 stars because I pulled an all-nighter to finish it (with only some regret the next day).
This book had all the payoffs I anticipated in the first book:
- Sedric being brought low and actually looking at himself and owning up to everything because he sees that's what he and the good people around him deserve
- Alise taking what she wants from life hell yeah
- Rapskal and Heeby subverting everyone's expectations
Also so glad that Thymara continues to stand up for herself, in spite of Greft, the other Rain Wild boys, and Sintara. Ew to Greft giving her the utterly false "choice" of which boy to mate with. Glad to see him exposed as the self-serving man he is. Mixed feelings about Tats because he continues pushing Thymara, but I do it seems to come from wanting to understand and he seems to actually want to understand, though he struggles to sometimes.
I'm also curious to see how the relationship betweenHeeby and the other dragons might change. I think it's likely her deeper bond with Rapskal has given her a greater capacity for communication than before. Between that, being the first to fly, and being the one that found Kelsingra, I wonder if there will be some power struggles with Sintara.
