Old Hollow by Jeremy Megargee

5.0

A werewolf book that finds that perfect balance between true horror and true humanity.

This short book is not for the faint of heart - it really dives right into some disturbing content, but finds a good balance between shocking scenes and hopeful ones. The characters were well-balanced in terms of their personalities. They were shown well and quick, popping off the pages and standing out on their own. There was no blending of who was who, which is incredible that this could be shown in such a small book.
While the werewolves of the tale were awful and the humans had survival skills and a deep desire to survive the massacre brought down upon Old Hollow, there was still some humanity peppered into the werewolves. I found this particularly interesting. Whenever the backstory of a wolf was brought up, I found myself understanding them to a degree.
As I neared the ending I thought it was going one way - and it went a totally different direction without being left-field. In fact, everything was placed in the right spots for the perfect set up and I was pleasantly surprised with how it went.
For fans of 30 Days of Night seeking a werewolf tale that is truly terrifying.
