The Crossing by Cormac McCarthy
2.0

Some really great moments in this story, interspersed with a exceedingly frail plot, lead to me giving up 2/3rds of the way through. I love the description of the landscape and it's moods - this is definitely McCarthy's strength. Unfortunately we're never given any hope of knowing any of the characters as they fail to rise from the flat scripts they've been given. To be fair, this is likely a highly nuanced story that would benefit from the reader having a background in US/Mexico history ca the 1950's, as well as a good understanding of Spanish as much of the dialogue takes place in Spanish. Too bad, I loved All the Pretty Horses.
