Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin

Well, this definitely is what it says on the tin: a fever dream. I read this in one day, and it’s got to be best enjoyed this way. I did struggle hard at first with the initial conversation’s lack of dialogue tags and quote marks, but after a while I stopped stressing over it.

I did have to go find an explanation of what the fuck I had just read immediately after finishing. The plot itself was less important than the anxiety and building terror that it was able to bring out in me. It very effectively did that without a doubt, but I feel a little stupid for still thinking something supernatural might be at the source of it by 70%. However, that explanation I googled quickly brought all my puzzle pieces together into a clear picture and I felt a little dumb. But that’s kind of the point isn’t it?

Edit: Horse girl note: As I was returning this on Libby, I saw the horse on the cover and remembered: why did the stallion that jumped the paddock gate have reins on??!! Carol mentions grabbing them when she catches him at the river. Or did my sleep deprived brain miss something?
