We Spread by Iain Reid

This review of this book isn't going to be very straight forward. Very much like the story of the book itself. That is because this book needs to be read. And I feel like I should not say to much. And I feel everyone comes out different after reading this, with a different opinion about what is going on.

The story is very carefully thought about and then written by the author. This story will definitely will stay on my mind for a while. A lot of the story is up to the readers interpretation. There isn't a: oh - that's whats going on or anything like that. In the first moment, right after I was done reading the book, I was mad. I was mad because we always feel like we need answers, but the longer I think about it, do we really though? The book was written from the perspective of an elderly woman with memory loss due to her old age. The reader is supposed to experience her experiences from her point of view. Which, quite frankly.. is/was scary.

The story is about Penny. Penny is old. Penny needs to be moved into a care facility after she had an accident at home and she used to be an artist. He memories of her old life fade but she desperately tries to hold onto them. There are 3 other elderly patients with her. She is encouraged to paint, eat and sleep. This is repeated every day but yet it seems like she is longer there despite the face that is has been only there for a few days. What is really going on in the care facility? And why can't she leave?

In the end, I felt hopeless, sad, confused, and I was left with so many questions. But also, maybe, because she was old and getting towards the end she just didn't had the capacity to understand what was really going on. Are we all going to experience this? We all fear death. Now I fear old age. Really old age.
