This Time It's Real by Ann Liang

4.0

“i guess my point is that I do believe in love. really. i’m just not convinced that kind of love could ever happen to me.”

i’ve not felt this seen by a character in a really long time but eliza really captured everything i feel about falling in love here. she tries to do everything practically and rationally but somewhere within, she longs to let go, but then fears the consequences of doing that. she wants to be loved but worries she is incapable of ever being seen in that way. so as a defense mechanism, she puts her walls up and pretends she doesn’t care.

i’m not totally not like that whatsoever hahaha lol lmao

all that aside, i absolutely adore ann liang’s writing, the escapist nature of her plots and characters (fake dating a young actor) yet the feelings and experiences all feel so real and grounded. there’s always the cutest moments and the most honest conversations, all tied in a pretty package with fun and digestible yet meaningful writing.
