Doctor Who: The Pirate Loop by Simon Guerrier
4.0

It's been a hot minute since i read a 10th doctor book i actually enjoyed. Thankfully, this was actually one. I didn't really like the previous book i read from Simon "The time travellers" which was a first doctor novel, but that was just because it got a little long in the tooth. Because of that i was a little leery going in, but to my surprise, this book actually ended up being quite an enjoyable experience.

Martha and 10 end up on ship that was lost to the ages in space and they're going to find out why. They discover they're stuck in a time loop while being boarded by badger-like aliens that are pirates. however in this time loop nobody can stay dead so they're kind of in a stalemate.

This story was actually very interesting. Normally when the doc shows up people are dying. This is the case here, but they don't actually STAY dead. they pop up a few minutes later just fine. So death being removed from the equation actually makes the stakes very interesting. what do you do when you have enemies that aren't very intelligent but can't kill you because you'll just come back?

There's a lot of talking in this one with both Martha and the Doc. They don't spend a lot of time with useless side characters and every side character they DO introduce actually comes off mostly charming and witty.

Without too many spoilers, there's a part in the book about 2/3 of the way through where i assumed something was going to happen and got mad about it, but i was actually tricked by the author and the twist ended up being really cool and the ending was great for it.

I did not expect to have as much fun with this one as i did and once i really got into it, i read the rest of it quite fast.

Martha has a lot of good dialogue with the alien people on the ship as well as the badger people, and you actually get to learn about everyone's motivations and personalities, even the villains.

If you're into Doctor who books but really can't stand ones where there's a lot of sadness and death, i really recommend this one. it's a nice refreshing one if you're just looking for a fun, banter-filled good hearted adventure.

This and Sick House are definitely my favorite 10's so far.

3.5 out of 5 rounded up to a 4.
