Big Bad Doctor by K.C. Crowne
emotional
lighthearted
medium-paced
2.0
No strong representation of diverse characters or minority identities.
I felt there was a lack of chemistry between the main characters. I didn't really understand what they had in common that would make them want to pursue a relationship after only spending four days together.
There were also a few character inconsistencies. For example, the Hero is introduced to the reader when he's being hit on by a graduating medical student. His inner narrative informs the reader he used to do that when he was younger (trading ONS for their advancement in the medical profession) but he's tired of it in his "old age" (he's in his mid-30s). But, later on we discover he dated his ex-fiancé for 10 years. At ~25-years-old he would be just graduating medical school himself, therefore, his sordid history doesn't fit.
Finally, after the surprise baby is revealed there were two parts that seriously impacted the rating. First, the Heroine's OGBYN of course turns out to be the Hero and she denies to his face that the baby is his. I was seriously disappointed in her, especially considering she was just talking to her friend about finding him and telling him about the pregnancy . Second, the Hero's ex-fiancée is pregnant by a ONS but tells their social and work circle that he's the father and refuses to stand up. In an attempt to pacify her, he agrees to give her money every month to support her and the baby... and never tells the Heroine. When the Heroine finds out, it's completely brushed aside. 🙄 If I were the Heroine, i wouldn't want someone who blackmailed my loved one and tried to ruin their career even tangentially connected to my life.
Safety Rating: Safe with Exceptions
• No cheating
• No OM drama
• Does have OW drama
– the Hero's ex-fiancée wants to get back together. When she's rejected by the Hero, she tells everyone she's pregnant with his baby when it's actually from a ONS.
• Does have the Heroine pushing the Hero away
• Does have a couple of months separation
Possible Triggers: Yes
• Hero's ex-fiancée is a drug addict and attempts to backmail him into rekindling their relationship
Ending:HEA with Epilogue
