This was very interesting to read that I am lost for words to fully describe how great it is. Dread Nation has been on my tbr for so long that I could not recall the premise of the story and just jumped head first into it. I was initially drawn to its beautiful cover (yes, I do judge a book by its cover lol). With that and Ireland's tale from the A Phoenix First Must Burn, it just convinced and motivated me to seek out her own novels.

WOW...I, absolutely LOVE Jane's character. She is so unique in her own way from her tenacity to her boldness. It was truly enjoyable to experience such a genuine character that took no one's bull and was smart to let people undermine her.

I did struggle with the timeline of the book: towards the end of slavery with racial tension and the overuse of word negro. Personally, there will never be a "good" time to read about racial injustice and discrimination...so I did not let that stop me from appreciating Justina Ireland's work.

Overall, the book is well written. It's like a work of art compressed into the form of a book.

It was somewhat of a therapeutic coping mechanism to remember that even through those shitty times, there are still good people out there and to not lose hope.

I am grateful to have listened to the audio of Dread Nation. Bahni Turpin did a FANTASTIC job of differentiating each character's accent and I could listen to her voiceover works FOREVER🖤🖤🖤The voice established for Jane, MC, resembled Telma Hopkins (who played Rachel on Family Matters) so I did find that a bit distracting when imagining how she looked.

I cannot wait to read the second installment in the near future.
