The War of the Worlds
by H.G. Wells
Simply brilliant... a hundred years ahead of its time... some of the language is a little archaic, and the pace can get bogged down at times, but this is literary genius and well worth the effort to read.
Book 2, with the curate going mad and luring the Martians into the devastated cellar, is a superb character study and builds tension in a realistic, believable fashion. I thought this was captured quite faithfully in the Tom Cruise movie rendition of War of the Worlds.
This novel has been a forerunner for over a hundred years and will continue to be one of the landmark works of science fiction for centuries to come.
