The Quiet American by Graham Greene

5.0

4.5 stars. A melancholy story about the struggle between idealism and a cynically tinged realism. The cleanest hands belong to Granger who can’t see beyond his nose.

The prose is very good and memorable, along with the characters. Outside of the smattering of French throughout (which I know none of), this book is easily engrossed. I had a difficult time putting it down and wanted it to continue for longer.

Would recommend to anyone interested in mid-20th century literature, foreign affairs, and colonialism.
