It Only Happens in the Movies by Holly Bourne

emotional funny fast-paced

5.0

Audrey is done with romance. Not only is she dealing with her own breakup but she's also still processing her dad leaving and starting a family with another woman. Is it any surprise that she's cynical. But then she starts a new job at the posh cinema in town and meets local bad boy, Harry. Does happily ever after only happen in the movies?

~Review~

Now this is my kinda book! I love a story about messy relationships and awkward feelings and I absolutely ate this up.

Audrey is a really strong protagonist and I couldn't help but warm to her. Bourne captures growing pains so beautifully and vividly, there were so many moments where I just wanted to give Audrey a hug and tell her we've all been there. And that's credit to Bourne for making her so believable.

I think the messages in this book are so important, not only with the feminist commentary on romantic comedies but also with how sometimes the things that we want aren't necessarily the things that are best for us. I wish I'd read this at 18.

This book is also hilarious! I was literally laughing out loud at points. But there's also some really heartbreaking moments for balance.

This is my kind of YA contemporary.
