I loved reading this book mainly because it was the first time I had read a novel about black queer women not in the US! Its so easy to just fall into. This book is funny and talks about the complexities of race/class/age/etc. However, it sometimes felt very Novela TV show. So I’d look up from my book on the train and be like she did not need to write that like what?? But if you’ve just started to read again it works because drama like that makes you wanna keep reading. The biggest problem for me reading this was the discussion of sexual assault. There are pages where the retelling feels forced, unnecessary, and uncomfortable. There is no need in the span of maybe five pages to repeat it over and over again. It just felt like all that character would be was a victim. The way the assault would be mentioned even started to feel like a quirk only because it had been rephrased so many times.
Moderate: Addiction, Rape, Racism, Sexual assault, Sexual content, and Transphobia
