The Hollow
by Agatha Christie
Felt extremely impressed with myself for figuring out who the murderer was, what their motive was, where the murder weapon had likely been hidden, and the general motivations of those characters surrounding the murderer (to a degree). This novel felt similar to By the Pricking of My Thumbs and And Then There Were None, in that the characters are more fleshed out and engage in some thoughtful and largely melancholic inner monologues. As per usual, healthy dose of melodrama, which I always love. Some awkward commentaries on class, including the entire character of Mrs Crabtree, and when Edward sees the abuse Midge suffers as a retail worker and insists she allow him and her other rich relatives to look after her. These are, I suppose, attempts at awareness in an otherwise comfortably upper-class setting. I liked Henrietta as a character who had to deal with the bullshit that is the male ego as well as gender stereotypes that she felt frustrated the ability of those around her to see the truth of situations (probably including assumptions by others about the supposed bullshit that is the male ego).
