Amateur: A Reckoning with Gender, Identity, and Masculinity by Thomas Page McBee

emotional informative reflective slow-paced

Interesting and thought-provoking. The author breaks down complex concepts well and the reflections about grief and his changing relationships with his partner and family are particularly interesting.

There were parts that felt very specifically American in ways that were harder to access, both in the author's experiences of masculinity and in geographical details (eg the different neighbourhoods in New York). I was also surprised
there isn't much perspective from Eric  - did he not want to be interviewed?
