This is a broad narrative following a family across huge social and political change: colonisation, war, systemic and personal discrimination. It is quite harrowing at times. I found the idolisation of USA by some of the characters quite grating (esp during a Trump presidency). And the narrator's voice is too high and immature for my ear.
Regardless I read to the end, and appreciated the depiction of the characters' lives, moving, irritating (on their behalf), sad. The injustice of much of their experience is raw.
