I quite enjoyed this book, even if I'm still not quite sure what exactly Iberienne's plan was or what he truly expected to accomplish in the 'real world' outside of the outlands. It also felt a little incomplete, as while his plan was defeated, he ended the book still alive and the recitation at the West March still hadn't happened yet.
It was really nice to get some more backstory on Teela (I love her even more, now), and how she was one of the Barranni who heard the recitation/regalia as a child and was the only one who wasn't severely messed up by it. And the whole bonding with Kaylin over their dead moms who loved them, and the downsides of being immortal and not being able to forgot things like her being murdered by her father.
It was also nice to get a little more depth to the Consort, and see a bit more about how she thinks and what she feels about Kaylin - some hope, and less anger than she feels she should if she wasn't 'weak' according to her kind. Nightshade was also there and being his normal self, though I appreciated seeing him actually caring about someone (the Lady) since he doesn't truly seem to care about anyone else.
There was some follow-up for Bellusdeo at the beginning of the book, which was appreciated and served largely to make me feel even worse for her situation and the utter powerlessness/futility she feels in a world that is similar but different. It makes sense that she's seriously considering the 'deep sleep' or whatever that the dragons who couldn't accept the Emperor's rule went into. Glad she got at least one night of fun with Teela and Tain.
It's interesting that there are more Tower-like entities outside of the fiefs, in the 'waystations' and the West March, and it makes total sense that the Barranni weren't comfortable when they are awake and can mindread.
Kaylin's familiar remains mysterious and I keep getting more nervous the longer her remains unnamed/not truly hers, as more and more people warn her about the danger of it (even the fire elemental)! Looking forward to the recitation and seeing how Kaylin can make even more Barranni lords hate her (what will it be next time: more healing? More etiquette breaches? Holding more names? Spin the wheel lol)
