Rapunzel's Revenge by Shannon Hale

4.0

Graphic novels are for kids. Usually.
In this case, you might just want to give a graphic novel a try.
This was a really cute retelling of Rapunzel full of witty banter, sarcastic dialogue and a spunky narrator. Rapunzel, the narrator, was a great character. Fiery, strong-headed, and unafraid.
The pictures went along really well with the story. The book was full of many sarcastic comment, and the characters and scenes were all really nicely done.
Rapunzel's prison-tree, her hair used as a lasso, the outlaws (complete with skulls and animal skeletons). The pictures gave over the stark contrast between the lands that Mother Gothel ruined and the lush, green lands beyond her control in a way that words would've had a hard time conveying.
I was a very enjoyable read!

Content:
The book was very innocent.
There was plenty of mild-peril comic-styled violence: dungeons, huge snakes that eat people, scary dead lands with skeletons and bandits and graveyards, slave-like mine workers, characters almost choked to death. And, of course, Rapunzel, kidnapped as a child (don't tell me this is news to you), and her hair, which disarms many men of their guns before they have a chance to fire (I never thought hair could be violent before this book).
SpoilerThere was also the evil Mother Gothel getting trapped in a tree, but she was evil and deserved it. So, I don't think that should be too hard for anyone.
However, there was no blood shown at all.
Spoiler
As for romance, there's Jack. Introduced at first as a woman, then quickly revealing his men's clothes underneath the dress (and, it's not referrenced again).
There's a romance slowly developing between him and Rapunzel, and nothing much happens other than a kiss in the very last two frames of the story.
Also, Rapunzel's clothes are way outgrown after four years of living in a tree. There's a flirty lady with a revealing neckline in one frame. And, Rapunzel's given a dress that shows most of her shoulders, which she wears for the last bit of the story.
