Caligula: A Biography by Aloys Winterling

5.0

Easy-to-read and enlightening alternative view of Caligula who is popularly portrayed as a madman. It wasn't dry like I expected it to be. I feel like this take on Caligula might be a tad too positive but it's perfect because a lot of portrayals are so negative. They balance each other out, so to speak.

It's particularly interesting because it not only focuses on the facts surrounding Caligula but also discusses motivations behind certain depictions of Caligula, in the work of his contemporaries and also later on for Suetonius.

Note to self: Read this after reading the Twelve Caesars and I, Claudius.
