The High Mountain Court
by A. K. Mulford
I had high expectations with reading this book and I was left thoroughly disappointed. The High Mountain Court starts as your typical fantasy with a main female lead and a dashing male love interest. It tries so hard to be like other best-selling fantasy series that are out right now and does so poorly. The side characters aren't memorable or don't even go into their backstory/ personalities. I can't remember half their names if that tells you anything. The world-building could have been better, it seemed promising but never dives into anything above surface level. The writing I thought was rather poor and caught some sentence structure errors, which is pretty disappointing coming from a Harpers Collins imprint and not an independent publisher. The pacing of the book is extremely fast and the ending was so disappointing because the high point of the climax literally lasted 2 pages, and was extremely anti-climatic. I don't think I'll have any reason to pick up any of the other installments if they were as bad as this.
I also want to add I can't believe they let the horrendous quality of the map illustration fly. It is downright unreadable and ugly looking.
