The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

3.0

While it makes a big deal about exploring the “reality” as opposed to the “stories”, this novel is ultimately the textbook wish fulfillment fantasy: the child prodigy who’s so charismatic, tragic, and effortlessly masterful at every discipline who deftly overcomes impossible odds, has everyone love him, humiliates every bully who stands in his way while everybody claps, has every woman fall for him, etc. However, you can’t deny that it can be satisfying, and I like how willing the book is to take its time and focus on low-stakes situations. It really started to wear on me in the second half, though, especially the sometimes unbearable romance.
