In the Midst of Winter by Isabel Allende

4.0

I picked this book both for its connection to Guatemala and Latin America (one of the three main characters is a young woman who escapes from Guatemala - the other two are a woman from Chile and an American man who lived for a time in Brazil) and for the season - it takes place during a blizzard in Brooklyn and upstate New York. I enjoyed the "present" sections (with the three of their lives intertwining during the snowstorm) very much; the "past" sections (flashbacks to each of their lives) were well done, too, but jarred me just a hair too much out of the flow of the "present." Even so, I enjoyed it quite a bit for the new takes on familiar topics.
