When I saw this new book at the library, I was stunned. I couldn't believe that after six years, there was finally a new Amulet book. I hoped that this was the final volume, since I didn't want another long wait for more, but I also kind of felt like the author would write until book ten, instead of finishing with book nine.
Well. This is the last book, but it sure didn't seem to be at first, because the author kept introducing new story elements and new characters, and this created more loose ends than it tied up. I found the story very confusing, and even though this partly due to how much I've forgotten from the previous books, the story itself doesn't make much sense, and parts of it directly contradict things from previous volumes.
I had refreshed myself on details from the previous books by reading Wikipedia synopses, but it didn't really matter whether I remembered the other books or not, because this one goes in all kinds of random, new directions and doesn't bring the past volumes together to a satisfying conclusion. The ending is abrupt and feels cheap, after all of the set-up and all of the new things introduced at the last minute, and the book conveys canned Life Lessons in a really stilted way.
The ending leaves it open for a spin-off series, but this is it for now. I'm really disappointed with the random, unsatisfying conclusion, and this will be especially disappointing for kids who grew up with the series and are now reading the final volume as adults.
