Street Cultivation
by Sarah Lin
Quick Summary :
I had initially put off reading Street Cultivation by Sarah Lin. I wasn’t entirely sure why. It just looked… Good? But not great. And with so many great looking books on my TBR list, It wasn’t a priority of mine.
I was pleasantly surprised, however, when, one afternoon, being in the mood for some cultivation, I picked up book one and began to read.
I spent all of my free time in the next few days devouring such a solid book that I can do nothing but recommend this fully to anyone interested in a bit of a modern twist on cultivation and/or progression novels.
The book is filled with some great characters and relationships, primarily Rick and his sister.
Some awesome fights and solid growth/progression.
A really cool modern/cyberpunk setting where your power not only affects your strength and abilities physically but is quite actually currency.
I feel like this would be a damn good tv series or movie even.
Without delving into too much, go read it. Highly recommended and I will be absolutely continuing the series.
8/10
Full Review (Spoilers Ahead) :
Rick is a guy with great character, who happens to have fallen on some pretty shitty times.
His sister has an expensive medical condition with no cure.
His parents both have died and left him with debt rather than inheritance.
His job pays him barely anything while he sits as a punching bag for rich kids with “Trust-Fund” cores called Birthers.
I was immediately impressed with his resilience and ability to stay positive, as well as his desire and drive to not only improve their lives, but to be there for everyone he cares about. Rick is a great main character.
I never felt like this book handed anything to Rick, whereas some progression books the main characters seem to have advancement planted in their laps, Rick had to fight through everything to get to where he ends up. Every positive has a negative twist to it, and every negative has a positive possible outcome.
The world was exciting and fun to be a part of though I wish it was fleshed out more. Hopefully that will come in the future installments.
I look forward to finding out more about the “golden core” and the lucrim types as Rick gets stronger. I also anticipate his sister harnessing her weakness/illness and turning it into a strength.
The side-characters were all awesome and I enjoyed each scene with them.
Except Rick’s best bud. I didn’t really like him.
Though the story didn’t have “world-ending” stakes or “dark lords” etc, it was a great self-contained read. The author’s writing was very smooth and easy to understand. The chapters were fluid and kept you turning each page for just-one more.
Another highly recommended Indie cultivation novel.
Go give it a try! Onto book two.
