The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo

Thank you to Edelweiss and Flatiron books for this eARC.

Enter the age of the Spanish Inquisition, and join a scullion with a gift for little miracles meet her fated match. This is the story of courage and ambition, as well as love and hope.

I went into this book expecting some historical fantasy romance with a vampire - as is the common misconception on TikTok nowadays regarding this book. This book proved to be SO much more.

I genuinely believe this is one of the best standalone fantasy books I have ever read. A lot can be done over thousands of pages and several books to create a world of wonder and characters you end up loving, but to achieve the same (and MORE) in just 400 short pages is incredible.

I was shocked to find myself rooting for not just our main characters, but the ones who were quite unlikable at the beginning. This is not a story of heroes and villains, but humans making their way through the world as best as they can with all the ambition and complication real life brings.

I will rave about this book until I die. You best believe I will be purchasing this in hardcover on release, just to hold and remember it by.
