Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins
3.0

Rebel Belle was pretty cute! Our heroine here is Harper Jane Price, a high school Southern belle who's very sweet, charming, proper, and very involved in her private school education. She's the leader of the popular girls, and her boyfriend, Ryan, is the boy every girl wants to date. The book opens on Homecoming night, and it's expected Harper will be crowned queen. Since she'd forgotten her lipstick, her best friend, Bee, lends her some, and Harper excuses herself to the bathroom to apply it. Imagine her surprise when the janitor enters and
Spoiler he's been stabbed. He then gives her a weird kiss and dies. Her history teacher bursts in next, and there's a fight, where Harper's shocked to learn she's now capable of superhero-like fighting. She emerges victorious and then the rest of the evening passes in a daze. It's gradually revealed that her school rival, David, a boy she's fought with since kindergarten, is an oracle, and she's his paladin, a person destined to protect him with her life (the janitor passed his paladin-ness to her with that kiss). His aunt Sydney, one of the town's leading ladies who has a finger in every pie, is a mage, charged with using magic to protect/care for David. These roles have been held by many people throughout history. Turns out Sydney isn't his actual aunt, the powers that be weren't happy when a boy was born as the oracle as the last male had wreaked major havoc, and they killed his actual parents. Sydney and the former paladin objected to actually killing David and decided to instead protect him. The powers that be eventually found him, and there's a huge showdown at the Cotillion, with another mage trying to imbue David with more powers, to make his oracle-ness more concrete, instead of the hazy visions he currently receives. Sydney is killed, and she passes her mage powers on to Ryan, Harper's boyfriend she broke up with after realizing she cared for David instead
.

Really hoping there's a sequel to this, as it's left wide open for one.
