Phantom Pains by Mishell Baker

4.0

A strong follow-up to BORDERLINE. Baker has a strong, engaging writing style, and she continues to turn typical fantasy tropes on their heads as she further explores the characters and settings she established in her first book. The scope is broader, but Baker keeps the pacing brisk and establishes strong characters and conflicts that kept me interested and wanting to see how things turned out.

If there's a flaw, it's that at times the plot turns over so quickly that it's easy to get a bit lost in the narrative -- I had to flip back several times to figure out what I had missed previously. (And, to be fair, I was interrupted several times over the course of reading, so that may been more my fault than the fault of the writer!)

Recommended for fantasy fans and folks that like things a bit out of the mainstream.
