I wanted to like this more, because the premise was good, but.. I didn't. I was never going to DNF it because it was so short, but I just kept thinking, "we have Invisible Cities at home." The frame narrative with Einstein and Besso did nothing for me (except to make me feel bad for Einstein's invisible wife!) and seemed to be there just to mirror the structure of Invisible Cities. As someone with even a surface-level grasp of the theories and philosophy it draws on, I feel like there are other writers (e.g. Chiang) doing much more interesting things in fiction with the concepts of determinism, metaphysics, relativity, et cetera, and I don't think you need anything more than a glance at Wikipedia to enjoy those works just as much.
