Illuminations by T. Kingfisher

Did not realize this was middle grade book when I picked it up, and I don't like leaving star reviews for YA books. I do like T Kingfisher's work just in general, and I've read a couple of her other YA books, and I wish she was writing them when I was a kid - I would have loved this.

This reminds me in a very intangible way of the Magicians of Caprona, one of the Chrestomanci books that I haven't read in decades but bought recently for ... fun, and because I can't stop buying books. You have a tween girl hero who tries to solve the problem by herself, a slightly crazy family, and magic. What I like about this as an adult reader is that the hero ( I have forgotten her name) does try to solve the problem on her own, but when she finally asks the adults for help, they give it and work together, and recognize what she contributes. I think a lot of kids books try so hard to empower kids that they forget asking for help is the most empowering.
