In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

4.0

I was initially underwhelmed and skeptical about this one. What I at first assumed was a gimmick to help steer how Machado structured this memoir, her concept of The Dream House becomes increasingly monstrous, somewhat always on the cusp of escaping its perimeters of being a haven for compartmentalizing Machado’s memories. This memoir is a wonderful reminder of allowing readers to vision writing as process apart from product—often shapeshifting to something else—whether in a writer’s control or not.
