Overall, I just wanted to finish this book for the sake of finishing. I'd jumped into this sequel because of the cliffhanger in What the River Knows, hoping for a more satisfying resolution to the chaotic ending. Sadly, I stopped enjoying it after the nonsense "I'll never forgive him for this!" Of which, yes she does forgive him and pledge her undying love to Whit because he meant well and the alchemical parchment turns out to be real. For anyone looking for adventure and romance, skip this one. It's not worth it. Here are some thoughts....

1. Inez sucks. She blindly trusts anyone and always miscommunicates with Whit. Other characters write it off as if her behavior is endearing but it's not. I was so annoyed by her as a main POV that halfway through the book I started skimming her parts in order to move things along. She is juvenile and naive to the point of endangering her 'hermana' Isadora and hated/beloved husband Whit.

2. Whit's POV chapters were less frustrating but I don't understand how he could deal with the constant shenanigans Inez pulled. Hey let's go undercover at this auction & get intel, so stay incognito---meanwhile Inez isn't wearing a mask & makes multiple batshit highball offers at the auction. This man has some patience.

3. The reveals for Cayo's fate and the dealings of Lourdes should've come sooner in the book. A significant portion of the middle of the novel drags before the 80-90% info dump. I nearly DNF'd the book because of this and my dislike of Inez.
