The Book of Phoenix by Nnedi Okorafor

4.0

Phoenix is only two years old, but she has the body and mind of a 40-year-old woman. She's held captive in Tower #7 along with other speciMens, people of mostly African descent who are experimented on by the secretive Big Eye corporation. When Phoenix breaks out of the tower, she learns just what powers she might have and how to use them. She reconnects with other speciMens. She transports an alien seed.
There are a lot of layers to this post-apocalyptic story, which features action, mythology, and issues of colonialism, slavery, medical experimentation. It sort of read as a YA book to me.
