Kiss Number 8
by Colleen AF Venable
This book has art that looks like it should sit on my shelf in between This One Summer and Bloom. Beautiful brush strokes, expressive faces, panels crowded with info and story.
The plot is engaging and interesting, and I think the characters have more depth and energy than I’m used to in graphic novels!
Here’s a fair warning though—there is a lot of heavy stuff in this book. A lot. A L O T. The pitch I got made it seem like a romcom, and that pitch came from the author. Honestly the cover makes it seem that way too. It’s not. It has moments of joy and humor but mainly it’s unraveling a lot of hard material in a time that was especially hard to be lgbt+
That said, I did feel like the sense of time was very present until the last like 30 pages, when I would have fully believed it was set maybe this year or last. Make of that what you will, but it threw me less than I thought it would.
I’d recommend, but only with heavy trigger warnings for homophobia, transphobia, and domestic abuse.
