Continuing my trend of picking up comics from authors I’ve already read, The Nice House on the Lake is written by James Tynion IV, who also penned Something is Killing the Children and House of Slaughter, a comic book world that I discovered last year and have been eager to dive back into.

I’ve been on a bit of a horror and thriller kick lately and honestly a lot of what I’ve read has not resonated with me the way this book did. This title rides the line of horror, science fiction, and mystery in a very satisfying way. Unfortunately, it is difficult to talk about it in more than the most obtuse ways lest the revelations within the book be spoiled. The art is adept enough to catch moments of quiet, beauty, and the grotesque with equal appeal. Each chapter has a set pattern that keeps the intrigue high while slowly rolling out the story of how the characters got to this point. Again, it is all very satisfying.

I’d recommend this book to horror fans, particularly ones with locked room mystery settings like Cabin in the Woods, Virtue’s Last Reward, Circle, or Dangan Ronpa.
