I think the word for this is boilerplate? It felt very off-the-shelf, standard noir detective. It's saving grace was that it popped right along, easy to get into and slightly fun. Also weird - the author was sort of a character? Or at least there was a writer by the same first and middle name. Actions seemed divorced from consequences, everything seemed to happen with little reason or weight. But, a fun pastiche and good summer reading.
