You guys. You GUYS. This book was SO GOOD. I am going to try to review whiles till processing so bear (bare?) with me.
I hadn’t heard ANYTHING—and i mean, not a PEEP—about this book prior to reading it. I was used book hunting in Gainesville with a friend, when the BOTM edition they had caught my eye, and I thought the premise was intriguing.
First off, i think the marketing was not done properly. This book was marketed as ‘hilarious’, and sure, the concept of there being a 9-to-5 deal department in hell is ironic, but thats where the supposed hilarity ends.
Next, the book changes mood like 2/3ds of the way in, changing from a upbeat, hellish (literally) adventure, to almost a thriller type of book. These two things I think contribute greatly tot he negative reviews.
Even though I loved this book, I totally get why these things would turn people off and leave a bad taste. With alllll of that being said: WOW. I LOVEEEED this book and thats saying alot because I dont typically read (or care for) general fiction.
This book has so many layers, most of which I did not anticipate. The overall concept was cool, but also the way the department works, the main characters’ own intrinsic motivations, the twists (and there are a few) the ENDING??! Just WOW. Not to mention that I didn’t expect the little tidbits of wisdom that were dropped quite abruptly, but befittingly throughout.
Okay, sorry that was long, and I might change my opinion in the future (still processing) but for now, this book blew my mind, especially because I went in blind. Definitely will be recommending!!
