A Christmas Carol and Other Christmas Writings by Charles Dickens

What I liked: I enjoyed the familiar classic and being taken back in time to London… a place I love. I appreciated the sentimentality of this book during Advent.

What I learned: Reading it (along with commentary) this time I learned more about the economic and monetary policy of the time. It paralleled well with the chapter of “A People’s History if the US” (Robber Barons and Rebels) that I was on and allowed me to reflect on concepts like debt and poverty then… and now. It truly is “so expensive to be poor.”

Style Critique: the imagery and symbolism are vivid and, reading as an adult, more disturbing than I remembered. It was captivating and convicting as a result.
