Oh Crap! I Have a Toddler, Volume 2: Tackling These Crazy Awesome Years--No Time-Outs Needed by Jamie Glowacki

4.0

As a parent of an almost 3 year old and a 6 month old, I feel like I did learn some valuable things from this book. I listened to the audiobook and I feel like the author’s narration was very well done. She talked animatedly and like she was speaking to the reader, rather than just reading the book. You can feel her passion for the topic which I really appreciated. My main complaint is that I would have liked more examples to go with the tips, especially when it came to the part on discipline. I would have liked specific instances of child behavior and the disciplining measures that would go with that behavior, in her opinion. That part was vague to me. However, I enjoyed the book overall and am excited to implement some of the things she mentioned; mostly the dedicated, phone-free time to connect with my toddler, and the crafting ideas. The crafting section was eye opening and I found myself getting excited about connecting with my toddler over something that’s so open-ended and fun for both of us. I will say, if you’re looking for a quick fix (or a “bandaid” as she calls it), this is not the book for you. She really gets down to the core of the offending behavior and directs you to start there, and indicates that many of the behaviors can be corrected in that way. (I.e. stressful and fitful bedtime routine? Investigate the child’s diet or spend more dedicated quality time with your child). Not necessarily many tips that are beneficial in the heat of the moment, but rather things to change to get to the root of why the behavior is happening.
