“At least I now knew that the male species were asses no matter what planet they hailed from.” Listen, this book was silly. The writing and dialogue was silly. The main characters were silly. But I also ate it up. I had read the Lux novels when I was younger, and this book is an adult version of those books - i.e.; very steamy. It follows a human girl named Serena, who is talking with one of her close friends, Mel, one day. Mel tells her that she saw this guy she was with turn into a big glowing alien, basically. And Serena doesn’t want to think her friend is crazy but when they sort she witnesses an explosion and one of the glowing boys. She gets sucked into the work of the Luxen and the Arum because now she has information that there are aliens among humans, and she’s not supposed to know this. Her life is in danger because of it, and the government provides an Arum - basically a bodyguard - to protect her, and that’s Hunter, who is the other POV we get in the story. They act like they hate each other when they meet but they clearly are attracted to each other. Hunter hates that he has to protect a human; he thinks its below him, but his job grows from duty to something more. He actually wants to protect her. Meanwhile, Serena hates the idea that she needs to be coddled by this guy, but she also starts to love him. From the start of them meeting it’s basically just a lot of danger and sexual tension. A lot of Hunter having this obsessive masculine need to protect her. My feminism kind of disappeared for a few of the scenes; I’ll admit they were pretty steamy. At the same time, I rolled my eyes so many times at some of the things Hunter said in his POV. He’s cocky. He’s hot and he knows it. He supposedly can get any girl he wanted. The usual. At one point Hunter has to make a decision to continue to protect Serena or not after the government gives up on her safety, and he of course loves her so he ends up protecting her at all costs, this time because he wants to. This job also did not hold back on the steamy scenes. In the end they end up going to stay with Hunter’s brother and his girl in a safe place. Mostly I feel like this book was about the sexy times between Hunter and Serena than the actual plot. Which was fine. That’s all it needed to be. Don’t expect the writing to be top tier. I had a lot of fun with it.
