Reading The Three-Body Problem felt like being back at university again, reading academic journals for an assignment. I lost count of the times when my eyes glazed over reading this, especially near the end.
That being said, it wasn't that I didn't enjoy the story; in fact, the whole premise was exactly my cup of tea. What I struggled with was the long paragraphs of jargon filled physics explanations. Lots of this just went over my head and took me out of the action.
I found the weaving of the two timelines to be really interesting and the ending sets up for a sequel nicely. The parts with the virtual game, whilst bizarre at times, were also some of my favourites in the book.
I wavered between two and three stars for this. In the end, I decided that the positives outweighed the negatives. I will most likely try out the second book in the series, but I won't be rushing to do so.
